Three UAE residents, Toby Gregory, Orlagh Dempsey, and Andy Savill, have set sail on a daring 1,500km rowing expedition across the Arctic Ocean. Their journey, dubbed The Arctic Challenge, aims to raise awareness about ocean conservation and plastic pollution while breaking multiple world records.
The team will row from Tromsø, Norway, to Svalbard, enduring 20-25 days of grueling conditions in one of the world’s most remote and fragile ecosystems. Their boat, Ocean Guardian, will fly the UAE flag as they strive to be the first unassisted trio to complete this challenging route.
Beyond the physical feat, the expedition is a platform for environmental action. In partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme’s Clean Seas initiative, the team will conduct scientific experiments and engage with over one million students globally to inspire a new generation of environmental stewards.
Orlagh Dempsey’s participation marks a historic moment as the first woman to attempt this perilous journey, showcasing the growing role of women in extreme sports and environmental advocacy.
The Arctic Challenge is not only a test of human endurance but also a testament to the UAE’s commitment to sustainability. By combining exploration, scientific research, and education, this expedition aims to create a lasting impact on ocean conservation.
Key highlights of the expedition:
- First unassisted three-person row across the Arctic Ocean
- Multiple Guinness World Record attempts
- Partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme
- Strong focus on education and environmental awareness
As the team battles icy waters and unpredictable conditions, the world will be watching their progress, inspired by their courage and dedication to protecting our planet.
